Mahjong is a game that entails four players. At the start of the game, a player is the dealer. The meaning of the dealer lies in that he can have 14 tiles, while other players can only have 13 ones. The game is over after each of the four players has acted as the dealer in turn for four times.
The purpose of Mahjong is to gather together four sequences or triplets with 14 tiles, plus a couple of pairs (few special points are not composed of sequences and triplets, see the introduction about points below). Each sequence or triplet is composed of three tiles, while the pair of two same tiles. The so-called sequence consists of three tiles of consecutive numbers, such as Character Three, Character Four and Character Five, while the so-called triplet of three same tiles. The one that first gathers together four sequences or triplets and a couple of pairs (or special points) wins. The other three must give the winner money in different amounts according to points.
At the start of the game, the dealer discards the most useless tile, while all other three players are entitled to have the discarded tile. The dealer’s opponent on the right (player on the right) has the right to chow, pong or kong that tile, while the other two players can only pong or kong it. To chow means that if you want to gather together a sequence, and you already have two tiles of the sequence, for example, you already have Bamboo Four and Bamboo Five, while your opponent on the left happens to discard Bamboo Three, you can chow it to gather together a sequence. To pong means that if you want to gather together a triplet, and you already have two tiles of the triplet, for instance, you have had two tiles of Dot Nine, you can pong if anyone discards Dot Nine. To kong means that if you already have a closed triplet, say, you already have three tiles of Character Five, you can kong if anyone discards Character Five. If the players want to chow, pong and kong at the same time, the one wanting to pong or kong has the priority. Anyone that chows, pongs or kongs must expose the tiles chowed, ponged or konged without making any change. If one discards a tile, but nobody chows, pongs or kongs, the opponent on the right can withdraw a tile from the stack, which is called drawing. There is another situation of kong:if you have an triplet(exposed or closed), say, you already have three tiles of Dragon Green but you draw a tile of Dragon Green when drawing, you can also kong. The player konging tiles must withdraw a tile from the end of the stack. Of course, no matter whether you chow, pong or draw, you must discard a tile after the action to maintain 13 tiles.
After the tiles in your hand are all useful and you only need the fourteenth one to win, and now you are in the stage of ready hand. For example, you have gathered together three sequences, a triplet and a tile of East Wind, you can declare a win if anyone discards or you self-draw a tile of East Wind (you have to gather together special tiles in case of winning special points). In many cases, you can wait for more than one necessary tile, which will grant you more opportunities to win. For example, if you have gathered together two sequences, a triplet and a couple of pairs, and there remains an incomplete sequence of Character Two and Character Three, you may wait for Character One or Character Four to win.
Pros and cons of Mahjong 13 tiles app for iPhone and iPad
Mahjong 13 tiles app good for
Although I play by Japanese rules at my weekly games, so the scoring differs, this a great way to practice the strategies AND lets me play Mah Jong every day! What more could anyone as for?
The best Hong Kong Mahjong I can find. Good scoring, fast ai players, and very fair play! The "how to play" is a little convoluted since it was a mandarin to English translation so if you need a little help look up the rules online to clarify.
Theres not a lot of traditional mahjong apps out there. This one represents the game pretty well
I learned to play Taiwan-style with my wifes family, so would love to see that version supported. In the meantime, this HK version is very good.
I tried several other versions, none of them as good as this one. Love it!
Fun,great game.....remind me of younger time at parents house.....
Some bad moments
Love the game. Better than matching silly matching tiles. Good to have the in app purchase for discard hint and points analysis. BUT! I was still up on my coin count near the end of the game and suddenly one of the computer opponents get a major hand and clears me out. Ok, so this could happen in a real game, but this just seems like a shameless ploy by the programmer to get more of my $. I was constantly reminded to buy more coins if I wanted an uninterrupted game. Dont think that winning a big hand to get back into the positive coin count will get you back in. Still asks me to buy in again. Guess Ill always be playing east hand east round for ever....
In a real game, a winning hand collects from all opponents. In this app a winning hand only collects the point value once, not coin from all opposing players. So youll never get ahead in points because you pay out for all losing hands but only collect face value of your winning hand points...not triple.
I have been playing this game for a while alongside other 4 selected MJ games from the App Store.
I enjoy playing MJ live and am familiar with rules of different styles.
This game starts off with a noble vision to include more scoring features than most games on the App Store and thats why it was selected as one of my 5 for evaluation.
Vision and design goal however do not make great program. This game is full of bugs. Many rules as defined by the developer are not recognized by scoring at end of game. Scoring is erroneous in an alarming one-out-of-three ratio.
And when it comes to rules, many are just out right made up by a techies who has never play a hand of MJ in life! The Chinese saying 不知所謂 best describes about 30% of the rules defined.
MJ is not a video game. Its a national pastime of oriental civilization. So be a little serious, do some real research, play the real game in real life in China, Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong and overseas cities where MJ are popular.
Or take a piece of advice from a foreigner to just change the name of the game to something totally unrelated to MJ.
The rating of one by the way is but the lowest one can use to write a review.
Why You remove the numbers in some checker???
It is so difficult for those who dont know the Chinese
Pls fix it!!!
Like the game a lot. Only wish more terms were defined in the instructions.
Fun Mahjong game. It plays really fast & I want to learn the Chinese pronunciation so wish it was slower or if the player could control the speed of playing. But it is very authentic playing.
I am over 20,000 points on three devices. I win consistently. I played in China for many years and this is the closest to the real game I have seen. The exception is the "seven pairs." It comes up too much. Could use a couple of the other original scores like 2,5 or 8 in pairs or shut get long bad. Great game.
